FAQs

What is Earth Hour Jeddah?

Earth Hour Jeddah is a call to people living in Jeddah to join the world in making a stand against climate change. By participating in this global event, we show our support in taking responsibility for the way we treat our environment, and in teaching ourselves how to best take care of it by doing what we can. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, and has been an annual event since. Millions of people in many different countries have participated in the event.

What can we do to participate?

All you have to do is turn off most, if not all, of the non-essential lights or any other non-essential electronics such as stereos/radios, televisions, video game consoles, etc. in your home or workplace for an hour on March 27, 2010, from 8:30pm to 9:30pm, Jeddah time.

But how are we going to survive an hour without electricity? Won’t that ruin our lives?

Non-essential electronics only. If you think turning off the lights for an hour will ruin your life, then perhaps you really shouldn’t.

How does turning off lights help this cause at all?

By merely participating in this worldwide event, you are raising awareness and showing your support in the cause. Our goal is not to save earth overnight (although that would be awesome), rather, our goal is to do whatever little we can to get people interested in this subject, and eventually make them more aware of what’s happening and what can be done to improve our lifestyles. Every little thing counts, and when they are added up, they’re not so little.

Isn’t that really boring?

It doesn’t have to be! If you have any other ideas on how to show your support, go for it! Some people have gone on picnics with friends, gone stargazing, played games and told stories around candle-lights, or hosted candle-lit dinners. The event is also a great chance to showcase your creativity.

And how can I showcase my creativity?

Take pictures of the event as it is taking place. Maybe gather your family and friends and participate in it together. You may share your photos with the world by sending them to us at e.h.jeddah@gmail.com, and we will publish them in our blog. We also have a website coming soon, and all participants will be featured there.

Do I have to be in a particular location to participate?

Nope. Stay where you are, or get together with your friends or family, at home, at work, wherever. And don’t forget to take pictures!

Where in the world can I get more information on this?

You can click on the pages on the top of this blog. Enjoy!
